During this time period, many things happened in The Great Gatsby. In the novel, Fitzgerald writes about things that happened in his life, like his first love, and wealth. The 1920s was a time when everything changed, like the end of the war. They started using advanced technologies like telephones, airplanes, and automobiles. Cars were cheap so everyone had cars, especially the Model T Ford. It was also the start of flappers, having shorter dresses, shorthaired, and being independent. You can see how Fitzgerald wrote this book to relate to what happened in his life, from his first love to still being single. In the novel, he also highlights many things that happened in the 1920s like more fashion, fancy cars, sports, the American dream, and bootlegging (perfect hour slide show). In the 1920’s, fashion was starting to be a big thing. For women, it was the start of flappers. Their dresses started to have more color and style. They liked to accessorize so brimless cloch hats were a big thing (Reddy 1). They also wore athletic clothing as normal daytime clothes. Tennis was a big sport for women, so many people would wear pleated tennis dresses. Women were all about the trends, so they all started to cut their hair into a bob look. With how their clothing style was, everyone could achieve the look with anything they had at home. For the men, they mostly wore suits. They were very elegant with what they wore. It is significant because it talks about how nice Gatsby's car is and how he has money. Gatsby's car is yellow and it shows he has money to get nice things. Myrtle “let four taxi cabs drive away before she selected a new one, lavender-colored with grey upholstery, and in this, we slid out from the mass of the station into the glowing sunshine” (Fitzgerald 27). This is significant because Myrtle didn't want any car, she wanted one purple to show that she is royalty. Many people during that time lived in the city, so they didn't need to drive anywhere, so they didn't have cars.
