Although some people might argue that Shirley Chisholm does not demonstrate leadership qualities, a closer examination proves that the former congresswoman was a strong leader because of her independence, perseverance,and willingness to take risks. I. Identification of Work The book, “Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom” was written by Catherine Clinton. Catherine Clinton is the Professor of American History at University of Texas San Antonio. She is extremely qualified due to her intensive work dealing with this time period of American History. She studied sociology and American History at Harvard and then received her Ph.D. at Princeton University.

Harriet has accomplished much in her lifetime including; Being a leader in the Underground Railroad, a spy, and a caretaker.
The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century enslaved people of African descent in the United States. It was in efforts to escape to the Free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists that showed sympathy towards them. The Underground Railroad was not “underground” and it wasn’t actually a “railroad.” The reason it was called “underground” was because of how secretive it had to be and it was called a “railroad” because it was an evolving form of transportation.
Civil rights demonstrates that all people, no matter what race, religion, color or class, are equal and have equal rights. Although the civil rights time period is a subject that is not talked about much today, it was years ago when there was a lot of segregation and discrimination. There were many African Americans who made a difference in their fight for civil rights, but not many white people tried to make that same difference. Jane Addams was one of the few white people who made this effort; she had an even bigger impact on civil rights since she was female and wealthy, along with her skin color. Research Paper: Rosa Parks Rosa Parks is an African American that grew up in one of many segregated cities, Montgomery, Alabama. Being the “First Lady of Civil Rights”, she had many opinions on the daily life of African Americans. But born in Tuskegee, Alabama on February 4th, 1913. She stood up for what she believed was right, and succeeded. Due to her courage, what she did to make history, and her race, Rosa Parks made a statement in the Civil Rights Movement.
In her document “ The Fakebook Generation,” later to be published in the New York Times on October 6, 2007, Alice Mathias enters the topic of the most used social networking service worldwide, Facebook. Mathias debates on Facebook’s claim of being a forum for “genuine personal and professional connections” and tries to influence her readers to ask themselves if the website really promotes human relationships. The author illustrates in her document the power and impact Facebook had on the population by convincing to be “a place of human connectivity,” but states her idea of Facebook missing its real reason of enriching human connectivity. Mathias goes on how Facebook became more as an “online community theater” than a functional service tool. She provided examples like people who announce relationships with Chinese food in their status in order to make others laugh instead of providing useful updates.
In Nicholas Carr’s article, “How Smartphones Hijack Our Minds” (November 10, 2017) Carr discusses the implications of allowing our smartphones to have such a huge effect on our lives. Smartphones serve many purposes, and have created massive societal effects throughout the world despite being introduced roughly only two decades ago. One can converse with anyone in the world at any given moment, they can watch any television show they want, and they can receive alerts so they no longer have to put effort into remembering things themselves. However, with so much control over people’s own lives, one begins to wonder about the negative consequences of the smartphones themselves.
While web surfing one evening I came across a Facebook page “United Conservatives for Canada”, this page is appalling and to think it has 19,607 followers. This page does nothing but promote hatred, racism and white supremacy. This is only one example of the multitude of hate sites on the internet and how one can influence others. With that being said, there are several pros to technology. The main one that stands out to me is mobile devices, I worked as a community support worker for several years and used google maps several times a day.
In her essay, “I Had a Nice Time with you Tonight, on the app,” Jenna Wortham believes that social media apps are a helpful way to connect. Wortham swears by apps and is grateful that she can communicate with her boyfriend who is three thousand miles away. Yet some may challenge the view that Social Media apps are a reliable and effective method of communicating, Sherry Turkle stresses people are substituting online communication for face-to-face interaction. Although Turkle may only seem of concern to only a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the negative effects social media can have on people. In her eyes, nothing can replace person-to-person communication.
It is a very clear argument for how the internet and technologies are harming us through many ways. Firstly, some of them said tablet devices led to some problems in our societies. Such as, isolation and turning inward and not to engage in the society around them and reduce physical activity, that leading to serious diseases such as obesity. (Mares & Woodward, 2005). The second argument is led to a lack of social skills.
