The American Dream is what most people strive for in life. Everyone wants to be successful and have no worries in the world. The problem is, actually achieving the American Dream. The Great Gatsby, written by F Scott Fitzgerald, shows how the character Gatsby is represented by the American Dream. Gatsby demonstrates the American Dream by being wealthy, having the determination, and the effort to fit into the lifestyle of the time period. Gatsby can do anything with the amount of money he has. He buys expensive cars, clothes, and has people do everything for him. His elegant and substantial house has people in it every second of the day. When Gatsby was younger he always had the dream of being successful. His dad explains to Nick about the book Gatsby wrote in to help him plan out how to achieve the American Dream. He says, “Look here, this is a book he had when he was a boy. It just shows you (173).” The book had a schedule in it describing what he would do everyday until he reached the American Dream. For example, it says he would get up, workout, study electricity, play sports, practice poise, and save money. This shows how dedicated Gatsby was to becoming rich, and that he believed in the American Dream. An influence in Gatsby's life was Ben Franklin. He also wrote schedules and that is what made Gatsby want to achieve more. The author is showing the readers that it takes risks to reach the American Dream. Another example of determination, was when he had nothing. In the novel it describes Gatsby as, “he had been beating his way along South shore of Lake Superior as a clam-digger and a salmon-fisher or in any other capacity that brought him food and bed (98).” Gatsby starts from nothing but works his way up to success. It just shows he achieved the American Dream by going through hard times. It shows his perseverance for the Dream and how he never gave up. Jay Gatsby is the American dream and demonstrates how to achieve it through hard work, money, and being in the right place and the right time. F. Scott Fitzgerald shows readers that in the 1920’s it was the time to be alive and go for the dream. He wants readers to be left with some hope of coming from nothing and ending up being happy. Even though Gatsby ends up dying in the end, he has done everything right to reach the American Dream and sets an example for others. It was as if Gatsby was running down like an overwound clock.
