After America gained their independence from Great Britain, James Madison of the state of Virginia developed the Articles of Confederation. These articles were designed to officially be the first set of laws that were expected to be followed. They were created as a temporary solution to our problems as a "unit". Being said, this made our new government extremely weak. After these articles were put into action it didn't seem to bring our states together, but it made them more independent.
Following the American secession from Britain in 1776, the colonies needed to implement a form of self-governance. In the early years of the Revolutionary War, the colonies drafted the Articles of Confederation, which outlined an agreement to loosely ally the states. At the time, American colonists were extremely wary of strong central governments. Thus, under the Articles, the United States maintained a weak central government with strong state governments. With this situation in place, the success of the U.S. government was mixed.
The time period during the 18th century had many influential people that changed American history. However, the three people known to be George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Abigail Adams made remarkable changes that would be remembered even till today. George Washington's presidency created traditions and established precedents that would be carried out through our government today and the presidents, also Benjamin Franklin would be a dominant figure to the colonies as well as Abigail Adams who would strive for women's rights.
