Without much warning, on June 22, 1941, Hitler’s German army invaded the Soviet Union, his goal was to destroy communism, and turn a large population of the Soviet Union into slaves. This invasion became the largest force in the whole European history. Joined by the Romanians and Finnish allies, the Nazis destroyed 3.6 million troops and thousands of tanks and planes along the 1,800 miles from the Arctic to the Black sea. At that time, the German armies went through western Russia, destroying and capturing entire Soviet armies. This rounded up to, 3 million captured in the year of 1941.

The Russians were trained to fight in the cold; however the Germans were not as fortunate. Approximately “100,000 cases [of frostbites] were reported by end of 1941, resulting in the amputation of nearly 15,000 limbs” for the Germans (Andrews). The harsh weather did not only cause problems to the German soldiers but also to their weapons. “Tanks and jeeps refused to start, and guns and artillery often froze and failed to fire” (Andrews). This gave the Red Army an advantage, because they were prepared to fight in the winter.

Poland was taken over rather quickly and according to secret protocol Germany and the Soviet Union divided up control over Poland because of the Nonaggression Pact (“World War Two History”). The six months following the war Germany wasn’t really active resulting in the media referring to it as a “Phony War”, little did they know that Britain and Germany navies were intensely facing off at sea and unfortunately Germany’s U-boats sank 100 Britain vessels in the first four months of the war. German forces invaded Belgium and the Netherlands which was known as “Blitzkrieg” translated as lighting war this happened on May 10, 1940. The Soviet Union requested substantial reparations from Germany, but the United States recalled the reason that World War II started was because of post World War I reparations. In March and April 1947, the United States, British, French, and Soviet officials met in Moscow to arrange Germany’s future, but failed. After the conference, the Western Allies unified their German occupation zones to create West Germany. In response to this, Soviets built the Berlin Blockade, cutting off railways, highways, and waterways into West Berlin. To counteract this, the United States airlifted food and supplies to the residents, until Soviets finally realized their blockade was not achieving their goals, and tore it down in May 1949.
