The Underground Railroad offered a passage to freedom as well as hope for many enslaved people. It was developed in the early 1800s, however, it was primarily used during 1850 through the 1860s. It was an operation that succeeded because of people who held the belief that all people are entitled to equal rights regardless of race. It was a secret system which was developed to help slaves escape to freedom. Escaped slave, Harriet Tubman, was instrumental in assisting numerous slaves travel through the Underground Railroad beginning in 1850. This passage helped slaves escape from the South into the North and extending as far as Canada. Tubman showed great courage and determination through her actions by helping slaves escape into freedom. Tubman was born a slave on a Maryland plantation. She suffered through severe brutality as a slave. Tubman knew that she did not want to live life as a slave. Therefore, she escaped from the plantation in 1849. Soon after in 1850, she went back to the plantation in order to rescue her sister and her two children escape to freedom. Tubman took great risks to help her family and other slaves during this time. These escapes were carefully planned out and executed during the nighttime. Tubman never lost a slave or allowed anyone turn around. Along with the help of former slaves and abolitionists, Tubman helped created safe havens along the way for slaves to rest and eat during their journey to freedom. Tubman put her life in danger in order to help everyone else. She helped over 300 slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. As a result, there was a $40,000 reward for her capture. This still did not deter Tubman from the work she wholeheartedly believed
