The Underground Railroad was a series of passage ways used to help fugitives escape slavery from the South to the North. The sacrifices of many people created an opportunity for slaves to live the life they deserved. Three main people were Harriet Tubman, Thomas Garrett, and Ellen Craft. Because of their bravery, many slaves were able to escape living in harsh conditions, ultimately attaining freedom. Harriet Tubman was one of the most important people in the Underground Railroad.
From the 1600s to the 1800s a lot of African Americans were involved with the issue of slavery. During that time there were many rebellions for them to get their rights back. The important actions that leading figures such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, during that crucial period, helped many African Americans towards freedom. Harriet Tubman,an escaped slave, became an Abolitionist helping other enslaved blacks, putting her own life at risk. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad.
Biography: Harriet Tubman was born as a slave on a Maryland farm. Her birth is said to have taken place in 1820 or 1821, but most enslavers didn't keep all birth documents. Life as a slave was very difficult for Harriet Tubman, her family of eleven children were living in a one-room cabin with her. She was only 6 years old when she was sold to a new family where she had to take care of a baby.

She was the first woman to lead an armed raid during the Civil War. Harriet Tubman did not fight for capitalism, free trade, or competitive markets. She repeatedly put herself in the line of fire to free people who were treated as currency themselves. She risked her life to ensure that enslaved black people would know they were worth more than the blood money that exchanged hands to buy and sell them.
Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, cook, and spy so she knew the land of the south very well. According to the Library of Congress, if any slave decided they wanted to stop their journey and turn back to return to their masters, Harriet would hold a gun at them and say, “You’ll be free, or die a slave”. Harriet feared that if slaves returned then hers as well as the other escaping slaves lives would be in great danger by getting discovered, being captured, and lastly being killed.

Harriet Tubman was a woman who changed the course of history by fighting against slavery throughout her entire life. Most modern-day individuals know her for conducting the Underground Railroad and helping hundreds of enslaved people escape from their captors. She went on several perilous journeys to southern plantations despite the heavy reward sum that plantation owners eventually placed on her head. Her courage and readiness to risk her own capture allowed many to live better lives in the North. However, conducting the Underground Railroad was not the only way she contributed to the abolition of slavery.
