In the second quarter, we read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and I selected Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling as my banned book. Fahrenheit 451 relates to censorship because it is about a man whose job is to burn books because all books in that society must be destroyed. Also, coincidentally, Fahrenheit 451 itself is considered a banned or challenged book. Work for Fahrenheit included reader/writer notebooks (where we had to define challenging words, analyze a quote, and ask deep questions about the reading section, which we had to discuss in our group) and analyze a poem called Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is also a frequently banned or challenged book because it contains magic,

The story is about a hard-working woman who is the sole provider for her household and she is subjected to physical, mental, and verbal abuse by her husband who is unemployed and insecure. During these times, women were looked at as submissive and obedient. Women were abused and worked through their blood, sweat, and tears. Black women were hired by white men/women to take care of their children and be the homemaker of their home and had to maintain the upkeep of their homes, children, and husbands.

The Puritans are a Christian religious group that originated in England but ended up in America. The Puritan religious is not commonly practiced now and might even be extinct. Thought they are either sparse or gone the Puritans have effects how we today worship. The Puritans had great effect on the way America was set up, but actually originated in England.
Fahrenheit 451 created many ideas, such as true quality of books, purpose of why reading book are important, and if we stopped reading then the children from new generation will never read as well. Even though the internet and social media replaced our need of information, entertainment, and the books, the books shall be required to be read by everyone. Books have power, should be for everyone because books promotes knowledge to people, creates wider worldview, and keeps culture living through generation. In Fahrenheit 451, the people who never read book knew nothing.

The Harry Potter series have been an interesting series for me ever since I have enrolled in Professor Fox’s class. I personally have not read any of the Harry Potter series during my childhood, but once I have enrolled in Professor Fox’s class I have recently just finished Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Throughout my readings of these two books I have had many observations on certain aspects of the story that I would not have noticed when I was younger. These three aspects that I can’t imagine as a child noticing is how the Dursleys abused Harry, the stance on gender, and prejudgement based on appearance.

The novel I have chosen is “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling. Which is one of the most well-known children’s novel in the world. It is about an 11 year old boy called Harry who before now has lived a very hard life with relatives who don’t like him. He suddenly discovers that he is, in fact, a wizard and is to be thought at the famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This is where he finds out that he is famous in the wizarding community, for defeating Voldamort as a baby.
