Death isn’t reversible. So if someone is wrongfully put to death, there isn’t anything anyone can do about it. But what if people knew that it was a wrongful death, and let it happen anyway just for the color of someone’s skin? In the book, A Lesson Before Dying by Earnest Gaines, there was a black man named Jefferson who was supposed to be executed because he was at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Jefferson had many lessons to learn before he was executed, so Grant was forced to help, even though he didn’t quite want to. Through a lot of hard work and dedication, Jefferson learned many lessons throughout his time being in the jail cell. The first lesson that Jefferson learns is realizing that he isn’t a pig and that he is, in fact, human. It seems as if this is the main lesson of the story. The whole reason why Grant is forced to talk to Jefferson is to teach him that he is a man. Jefferson is in pretty rough shape the first few times Grant visits him. Grant really wanted Jefferson to know he had to be strong and set an example for everyone- to be a hero. He made sure Jefferson knew how he felt. Grant had Jefferson walk with him in the dayroom to tell him how strong he needed to be. He told him over and over again about how he needed to be the hero for everyone. ‘He looked at me in great pain.
