How Did John Locke Influence The French Revolution

I picked John Locke due to the similarities in our beliefs and the influence he had on the French Revolution. John Locke believed that each and every individual had their own rights to life, liberty and freedom. He also believed that if a government power or ruler was not protecting those rights, then it was in the people’s hands to hold that ruler accountable and remove them from that position. With those beliefs in mind I believe John Locke would have supported and agreed with the revolution as a major part of the French revolution like many other revolutions was the unfair treatment and taxation on the people from a leader In this case King Louis XVI was abusing the power he held as he was taxing the lower class to make up for the the amount of money he spent aiding Americans in the American Revolutionary War. John Locke also believed that taxes should be optional and voluntary and so I truly think he would've been very against the way King Louis was treating the people of France as he forced the citizens to pay unfair taxes and be given nothing in return. I believe just like Locke that if the government or authority is abusing its up to the people to call out the people in power and hold them accountable and i believe if they give them a chance to change and improve, and yet they squander that chance it is then up to the people to remove them and change the system to make sure it serves the people not controls them. Although I do not believe that taxes should be entirely voluntary, I do believe that the tax system could be changed and improved upon because I think if taxes were entirely up to the people, then not nearly as much funding would be given to many, many tax funded
