Langston Hughes: Writing that Makes a Change How is Langston Hughes a large part of Black History Month? More importantly, who is he? Langston Hughes was an author and poet who wrote many books, poems, plays, and newspaper articles. Langston Hughes had a great love for a place called Harlem where he lived and died. He was part of the Harlem Resistance, an “African American Artistic Movement in the 1920s that celebrated Black Life and Culture” (Library of Congress). Langston Hughes was important to history because he made changes peacefully by describing racism in his writings. “Langston Hughes, in full James Mercer Langston Hughes, born February 1, 1902?, Joplin, Missouri, U.S.” (Britannica). A key point that defines his work is that he made his work about racial justice and political radicalism. Though with stardom some people are your biggest fans and some absolutely hate everything you have to say. “Some African American literary critics did not like Hughes’ work though. They thought he was painting the African American culture in a bad light by exposing the everyday struggles of African Americans” (PebbleGo). Some thought the opposite of the critics. Hughes didn’t care what they thought though. He just wanted to write about what realistically happened.
