Herbert Hoover (in office:1929-1932) Elected as America’s 31st president in 1929, and although it was not his fault for the Great Depression he was blamed for it. He made his situation worse for himself when he didn’t make a move to fix the dilemma. Ku Klux Klan (in 1924 it peaked-1929) A group with great influence in the south that protested against equal rights for blacks through intimidation and violence. During the 20’s the KKK dominated many state’s politics and in 1924 the Klan engineered the elections of officials from around the country. Charles Lindbergh (Feb 4th, 1902-1974) A famous pilot known for flying straight from New York to Paris in his plane, the Spirit of St.Louis. He became an icon in 1927 and a fascination for American women. Emergency Quota Act (May 19th, 1921) An act made to temporarily limit the amount of immigrants from each country coming to America. It lead to discriminating people from certain areas and resulted in the National Origins Act that made this law permanent from 1924-1965. Period of Isolation (1919-1945) After WW1 the U.S. isolated itself from the countries “over there”. Despite the treaty that ended the war, the U.S. wanted nothing to do with the League of Nations and chose to leave the other countries to deal with each other. Langston Hughes (Feb 1st, 1902-1967) An African American poet and novelist famous for African American themes that made him an important contributor to the Harlem Renaissance. He wrote in a new form called jazz poetry. He was famous for saying “I am Negro and Beautiful”. Warren G. Harding (in office:1921-1923) The 29th president who ended his term early by dying of a heart attack. After his death the Teapot Dome Scandal was revealed, a scandal that allowed private companies to lease land that had U.S. navy oil. His place was taken by Calvin Coolidge. Washington Conference (November 12, 1921- February 6, 1922) A conference held by Warren G. Harding with 9 nations attending. It discussed the Pacific Ocean and East Asia and was the first arms control conference in history. Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) Originally a nurse, she promoted sex education and birth control and fought the Comstock Law of 1873 to gain these rights. She started the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, gained women birth control rights in 1936 and helped make the birth control pill. She also (illegally) opened a birth control center in October of 1916 which was open for 10
