Langston hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. He is also known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance which was known as the rebirth of black culture in New york during the jazz era in the 1920’s. Langston was born on feb 1, 1902 and was raised by his grandmother after his parents separated. For his education, Hughes went to the Columbia University because his dad wanted him to become an engineer. He left after one year because of racial prejudice. Hughes was attracted to the neighborhood and the people of Harlem and thus continued with this writing poetry. After coming back from Europe Langston did odd jobs for a living. He then went to the Lincoln University and earned
