1920’s Warren Harding Essay
For many Americans, life after the World War I was very depressing. Many soldiers coming back to the Unites States didn’t have their old jobs, and were getting paid less money, too. America had to find a way to regain all the money they lost from the war. During WWI, there was a Democratic president, and the people wanted a change to get out of this slump. They thought if they brought in a new government, then it would be fixed. That is where Warren G Harding, a republican, came into play. In May of 1920, Warren G Harding delivered a speech in Boston, Massachusetts. Warren Harding went on to win the Presidential Election of 1920 by a landslide of 404 to 127 electoral votes, just under 300 votes, and over 7 million popular votes, or 60.3% of the most ever by a president. He won the vote of all the states except for Kentucky and Virginia. Harding had the biggest win of popular votes in presidential history. This was also the first Presidential election where women were allowed to vote. Warren Harding was President of the United States for only 3 years. He died in office because of health conditions. It is assumed he died from congestive heart failure due to the symptoms he had before died, but it is not known since his wife did not allow an autopsy of his body after death. While he was president, Harding passed the Emergency Quota Act, Budget and Accounting Act, the Shepard-Towner Act, the Cable Act, and he established the General Accounting Office. He was pro-business and pro laissez-faire economics. He was even asked many times by Herbert Hoover to step in and stop laissez-faire, but Warren just ignored him. Harding is known by most historians for being one of the least effective presidents in history, because he did not do anything important while he was in office, and he was a very distracted president who didn’t know what was going on as it was happening. He was also involved in the Teapot Dome Scandal, where several of his Cabinet members were convicted of bribery and corruption.
