During the times of the Pacificus Helvidius debate, France is going through a revolution. King Louis and Marie Antoinette have both been beheaded. France has a completely new government and declares war on the monarchy of Great Britain. France helped America during our revolution to help us gain independence from Great Britain, without France’s help we wouldn’t have become a free nation. After the revolution, a treaty is put into place, Treaty of Alliance put into place in 1778.

In the article, “In Defense of a Loaded Word”, the author Ta-Nehisi Coates claims the use of the n-word should be exercised exclusively among African-Americans. Although Coates claims the word should be used, it shouldn’t be for several reasons. Firstly, the origins of the word came from a very dark time period in America when slavery was yet to be abolished. Second, because of the fact that Coates believes only African-Americans should only use this word and no other race can is a double standard. If, for example, a black person addresses another black person with the n-word, the context of the word is taken as a friendly greeting, but if a white person were to say the n-word to a black person, then the context of the word would change and be perceived as an insult to the black person just because a white person said it.

France did a great deal to help the American colonists during their war for independence from the United Kingdom. It is possible to argue that the American colonists would not have won the war if it had not been for the French assistance. The French did not get involved in the American Revolution right away. The French did want to support the Americans because they wanted to hurt Great Britain (which was their main enemy in Europe).
The American Revolution The French and Indian War impacted the American Revolution in many ways. Britain incurred a large debt from the cost of the war and the taxes that they imposed on the colonists created feelings of anger and rebellion that led to the revolution. As a result of the French and Indian war, the British were not at full strength which allowed the actions of the colonists to be more effective. Because of the outcome of the war, France was willing to help the colonists. Without the much needed help from the French the colonist may have never won the war.

Kevin Carey explains how the price of a college tuition have risen across the United States. His first point describes that students are asking for to many “creature comforts” and college oblige them causing tuition to skyrocket. Lastly, he points on that colleges are marketing themselves this way on purpose. Now colleges are marketing “creature comforts” instead of focusing on education.
The Federalist party believed the strongest ally for our emerging country was the world power that was Great Britain. According to The American Journey textbook, the Federalists “admired Britain because of it’s stability” (291). This shows that the Federalists thought the United States should ally Great Britain because England was much more stable than France and was less likely to be conquered. The textbook also cites that Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists “distrusted France because of the violent changes following the French Revolution” (291). This violence could continue and cause France to become weak.
The substantial taxation, discrimination, and overall unjust treatment of the less fortunate was too much to just be ignored. The French citizens held riots and even stormed a famous fortress in revolt. It was suggested that the Declaration of American Independence inspired the people of France. When the American citizens broke away from England because of a disagreement with how things were being ran, it served as an example to the third estate of what could be (Doc. 5). No change taking place in society really lit a fire within French citizens.

In the 1800’s the newly formed country was split into Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Federalist were those who were supportive of the growth of the government towards a stronger federal government and agreed upon the ratification of the Constitution. Anti-federalist were those who did not support the growth of the government and did not agree with the ratification of the Constitution. When talking about the indifference people felt about the purchasing of the Louisiana Territory it is said that, “Members of the Federalist Party, already a significant minority in both houses of Congress, worried that the Louisiana Purchase would further reduce their clout” (Jesse Greenspan). In other words, the Federalists were worried they would lose their already set status when it came to society and the political world.
In the first place, both the American and French Revolution had their causes that would change history. The American Revolution was caused by the greed of the British and the thoughts of the enlightened people. All the peasants wanted to be free of the unfair taxation on items such as tea and stamps considering they had no say. This coincides with James Otis’s phrase, “taxation without representation is tyranny,” which led to, “no taxation without representation.”
The Federalists had beaten Jefferson in the prior election by only 3 votes in the Electoral College. France tried to bribe American representatives while they were negotiating the relations between the two countries. This caused the Federalists to be in an undeclared war with France. The Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Acts which curbed Republican power, consolidated power in the Federalist party, and prevented a revolution in the United States. The Alien Act restricted the rights and political influence of immigrants by not allowing citizenship via naturalization for 14 years, when it was previously 5 years.
This angered the colonist. The taxes is one of the main reasons for the division. However, it also helped to reinforce the American identity. Slightly before the French and Indian War, the period of Enlightenment helped many to have a voice in society and question their surroundings. With this, the Enlightenment helped to open societies mind to the Common Sense written by Thomas Paine.
SLANG 3 The Effect of slang on the English language The records show slang was first used around the 16th Century, but this is not certain, as it more of a spoken language and so it could have been much earlier. At this time people created new words as the English vocabulary was a lot smaller than it is today and so people felt the need to invent new words to express themselves. Nowadays slang is used much more frequently, with the influence of technology having a great effect on the use of slang. Some people think it has a positive effect on the English language, while others think it is having a negative effect.
