Long opposed the New Deal due to its conservativeness and lack of aid offered to the poor. He claimed that it failed to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. Instead the New Deal centralized power and credit “in the hands of few.” He desired change in the United States to reduce poverty and he used several sources such as the Bible, Greek philosophers, and English and American politicians to support his argument. Long stressed the statement of the Declaration of Independence, “all men are created equal”, be kept true and this would require that wealth be redistributed. He was against the massive gap between the rich and the numerous starving poor. He quoted the Bible by stating that it is crucial to “redistribute wealth ever so often, in order that there could not be people starving to death in a land of plenty, as there is in America today.” He admired that both President Hoover and President Roosevelt acknowledged the “decentralization of wealth” yet he stated they failed to enact any changes.
