The Medici Family was a prominent Florentine family that ruled much of Florence from the 15th century to the 18th century, and the family gained much of their power and wealth from commerce and banking. Lorenzo de’ Medici was one of the most influential members of this family, who was most influential during the mid to late 15th century. Lorenzo de’ Medici was influential because of his political stance in Florence and the region of Tuscany, so he provided for the city as a whole. As a patron of the arts, Lorenzo de’ Medici influenced the Renaissance, along with Florence. In addition to being a powerful leader, Lorenzo de’ Medici was a scholar who influenced much of the world and people around him. In 1471, Lorenzo de' Medici led the Florentine delegation in Rome to congratulate the new pope, Sixtus IV, and Lorenzo impressed him due to his influentiality to those around him. Due to Lorenzo de’ Medici impressing Pope Sixtus IV, he agreed to the papal account with the Medici Bank, which meant that the Medici Family gained a percentage of the pope’s savings and granted them an even larger fortune. By impressing the Pope, Lorenzo de’ Medici supported his family’s reputation through his government role, since he improved relations with surrounding people and places.
