The Canadian government cheated the justice system by moving the trial from Manitoba to Regina. The jury was all white and anglophone which benefitted the government. It should have been a mix of metis, white, anglophone, and francophone. Riel was admitted to a mental asylum in Quebec and stayed there for 19 months.
More than just a hockey player Maurice Richard had become a symbol of the French-Canadian people. In this sense, the suspension imposed by the NHL’s President Clarence
Throughout Canadian history, Canada had always been socially divided. Between the English speaking majority and the French speaking majority. One of Trudeau’s main objective was to erase this separation between these two parties. Firstly, in order to ease tension between the French speaking majority, Trudeau placed a “Official Language Act” in 1969 . This was the first act that English and French the
His reasoning behind this was to ensure that Riel had a jury of only six men instead of the common-law of twelve and to guarantee he was deprived of any Francophone or Catholics on his jury, and strictly had “Anglo-Saxon” individuals. Louis Riel should have had a longer life than he did. Being accused of invalid charges and then being illegally executed in attempt to preserve the rights and culture of the Métis. The number of imperfections that
Louis Riel was born the 22th october 1844 and died the 16th november of 1885. Louis riel is a Traitor because he did fight for his people form the canadian government but he also did it with the metis he is the leader of the metis and the government was scared that louis riel and the metis would kill the canadian government but louis riel only wanted power, people think that he is a real hero but once the people start to reward him he will take advantage and he will have power and he will betray his people. He fought for them just to gain there trust. Louis riel was going into elections so he can be president, louis riel went into those elections because he wanted power just pretend he is a great person but he is gonna betray all of his people.
Terrified and worried because of that incident, Louis Riel escaped to the United States in 1870 when the Metis needed him the most. When Riel came back, responsibility had to be taken for Riel 's actions. There was a fine of $5000 for whoever finds the murderer of Thomas Scott. For that reason, Louis had to spend 5 years out of Canada. He was banished from Canada and still came since at one point of his life he became insane thinking that he was a prophet.
In my opinion Louis Riel is a martyr because of the things he did for his beliefs. Being a martyr requires more than just a cause, it requires the individual to have strong beliefs for their religion, and then being killed due to those beliefs. Louis Riel would be classified as a martyr due to his actions and contributions for his religion as a Metis man. He helped develop and create an identity for the Metis community. He made a list of rights for Metis individuals some of which include the right to elect legislature, all sheriffs, magistrates and etc be elected by the people, all documents and acts of legislature be published in both french and english, etc.
A drastic approach some Quebeckers took happened during the October Crisis. It began on October 5, 1970, with the kidnapping of James Cross, a British trade commissioner in the city of Montreal, Quebec. This was carried out by a radical separatist group, Front de Libération du Québec, often shortened to FLQ. Later Pierre Laporte, the Minister of Labour, was kidnapped also. With these acts of terrorism plaguing Quebec, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau enacted the War Measures Act.
Exiled from his homeland. Hanged for high treason. These are not the deciding fates many would imagine for an individual who was seen by many as a hero, a humanitarian, or a prophet. None the less, this was the fate of Louis Riel. Louis Riel was seen by many as a man of good intention, but by some he was seen as a villain, a lunatic, and a traitorous man.
Louis Riel Sienna Wallwork Louis Riel was a traitor. He went against the Canadian government, and killed Thomas Scott. Even though he was standing up for the rights of his people, it was wrong of him to rebel against the government and to kill someone. However, he could be viewed as a hero.
Canada is now known to be a diverse, multicultural, bilingual and inclusive nation largely as a result of his work. Pierre Elliott Trudeau also believed in an equal Canada for all, he is primarily the one to introduce rights and freedoms to the citizens of Canada. While some view Pierre Trudeau as impulsive, for enforcing the War Measures Act, Trudeau enacted this for the protection of Canadian citizens against radical extremist and his actions were more rational than impulsive for the situation that had suddenly occurred. Pierre Trudeau was one of Canada’s greatest Prime Minister’s, who’s impact fundamentally changed the course of the nation by introducing multiculturalism, for introducing the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and for paradoxically upholding democracy by strong action during the October Crisis.
They placed him in a position where he would be isolated and likely demoralized. They removed him from a society that he wanted to be a part of. These actions and purposes are undoubtedly sinister. But the predominant reason?
In 1846, Scott sued his and his family’s freedom, but was rejected by the Supreme Court 11 years later. The final ruling had an immense impact politically, economically and socially. (Bell. “Civil War on the Western Border”). Chief Justice Roger B. Taney wrote an opinion against Scott, which makes logical sense since he is a southerner.
This government negotiated on an agreement which allowed the territory surrounding the Red River Settlement to be able to enter the province of Manitoba. Even after this the Orangemen tried to overthrow this agreement. His leadership was continuously
Both of the brothers, born from Indian parents who were “recognized band members of the Tobique Indian Reserve,” were charged with, supposedly, minor criminal offenses in Canada. If the brothers had committed serious offenses, then there would not have been people there protesting. Nicolas states, “Therefore, the main issues of the national protest are, the imposed immigration laws disturbing the aboriginal rights of all North American Indians.” Apparently, the Tobique Reserve Chief George Francis (1934-2013; he served two terms as the Tobique Reserve Chief), is part of the problem of Indian rights and the deportation order. Francis is said to frequently leave for Ottawa, and when he obtains a program, he hires his relatives, and it takes a toll on the non-supporters.
