I chose to write about John F. Kennedy using the his “Civil Rights Address” as my primary source. By writing this paper I hope to prove how JFK helped the civil rights movement even though his term was cut short. I’m hoping I can prove that during his term he accomplished something for this movement that had a lasting effect. Civil rights was and still is a big deal in America and I hope to find out about his contribution to that effort.
In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech about a promise land he was willing to fight for. Living in the 60’s there was racism and inequality among people of color. Dr. King describes the 60’s as a time that is in trouble but he sees great change coming where people will rise up and come together as one. An army of people coming together as one is always stronger than one single person fighting on their own. Dr. King’s purpose was to gain the interest of colored people in a non-violent fight to attain equal rights among all people.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a strong political leader who discussed the segregation of African Americans. MLK also was a minister and Noble Prize winner; he was also a leader in The National Association of Colored People (NAACP). Many African Americans opened up to what he had to say and followed his strategies of a nonviolent act in the Civil Rights Movement. MLK was one of the most important black leaders in his era where not only did he touch the hearts of many blacks but also grew to have many enemies with whites and other leaders who didn't agree in his nonviolent strategies and beliefs.
Civil disobedience is the act of disobeying governmental commands in a peaceful, non-violent, form of protest. Throughout history, peaceful protest have had a positive impact on free society. Peaceful protest have had the biggest impact during the Civil Rights Movement. During this time, many people have led non-violent protest for their rights, including well known African-American Activist, Martin Luther King Jr.. He was most famously known for his speech, I Have a Dream.
Martin Luther King Jr. had an immense impact on society through 1955-1968. Did Martin Luther King Jr. change society with his dream of equality? His dream was for racism in the United States to end. There were many techniques he used to get his point across; one concept he never used was violence. He believed that nonviolence was the most powerful weapon.
Influential Person Research Paper Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an influential figure because of his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement despite the challenges he faced such as constantly being arrested and his house being bombed. One of the first accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was his founding and presidency of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The SCLC is a civil rights group that focused on desegregating the south. The group's first focus was on desegregating the bus system, but they eventually moved on to greater things such as registering blacks to vote and organizing peaceful protests. This proves that King was a successful civil rights leader, even though he struggled against racists whites in power that would try to oppress him and his group.
One struggle that stands out was the Jim Crow Laws. The Jim Crow Laws were created during reconstruction in the south (History.com Staff). The Jim Crow Laws stated that African Americans had to use separate facilities than white people, separate bathrooms, drinking fountains, schools, and many other public places (History.com Staff). This law shows that multiple white Americans still believed that intermingle with other races was wrong. White Americans demonstrated that they were not ready for the change the civil rights movement by creating these laws to limit their interactions with other races.
Martin Luther King Jr., a minister and social activist, led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. He was an advocate for equality between all races and a civil and economic rights Activist. Because of his leadership, bravery and sacrifice to make the world a better place, Martin Luther King was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. His incredible public speaking skills and ability to properly get his message across can clearly be scene throughout the speech. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King held his famous I Have a Dream speech near the Lincoln Memorial. This was known as the March on Washington. More than 200,000 people came to this rally. It is an honor to be here this morning to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's assassination. Dr. King was a Baptist minister and social activist who championed the advancement of civil rights through tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience. Fifty years ago, Dr. King arrived in Memphis Tennessee to support the sanitation workers strike. On April 3, 1968, he delivered his last sermon here in Memphis, Tennessee, entitled “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ and on the following day, Dr. King was assassinated.
At the National Archives is located the draft card of Martin Luther King Jr., a Civil Rights Activist, who fought for the rights, freedom, and equality of everyone. Dr. King grew up during an era in history when racism and discrimination was the norm in America, so as an adult he dedicated his life to peacefully fighting injustice and inequality. He led marches, directed sit-ins, and participated multiple boycotts along with many other activists. Additionally, all of these actions where done to get the attention of the American government, American society, and the world. Dr. King wanted everyone to know that the way African Americans and other minorities were being treated was wrong and that these unjust norms needed to be removed or altered from our society.
President Kennedy accomplished many tasks to ensure the rights for African American citizens. Most African Americans were struggling to fight for their own individual rights as a citizen, but it was extremely hard for them because of segregation. John Fitzgerald Kennedy made a huge impact on the Civil Rights Movement and he fought as hard as he could to make sure there are equal rights for all citizens of America. Kennedy and Nixon were both debating in 1960, however, the civil rights issue could not be ignored. In 1960, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and John Kennedy called Mrs. King about his concern.
Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential leaders of his time and played a crucial role in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Luther was a charismatic leader who took a firm stand against the oppressive and racist regime of the United States (US), devoting much of his life towards uniting the segregated African-American community of the US. His efforts to consolidate and harmonise the US into one country for all is reflected in many of his writings and speeches spanning his career. As a leader of his people, King took the stand to take radical measures to overcome the false promises of the sovereign government that had been addressing the issues of racial segregation through unimplemented transparent laws that did nothing to change the grim realities of the society. Hence, King’s works always had the recurring theme of the unity and strength of combined willpower.
January 15, 2017, on this day in history the country celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. For many people, this day is a day off from work or school, but to many, it is not. Martin Luther King Jr impacted society by finding solutions to civil problems by his tactics of nonviolent protests and persuading speeches.
Introduction: The civil rights movement of 1954-1968 has made a huge impact on the history of African-American equality. All the great leaders of the movement have gone down in history for their courageous work and outstanding commitment to the civil rights movement.
