Power isn’t something given it is something earned. Well did Mayella earn her power? Due to Mayella’s class and gender her power may be limited. How do Mayella’s class, gender, and race affect her power? Well maybe she’s powerless, and because of her advantages she earns a limited amount of respect giving her power. Class, the level of income or education someone has; mainly about money. Mayella’s class is very low. As stated (document “D”) “Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the towns garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin”, meaning she lives in the low class area. Being white while living in the low class areas made people disown you just like how they did to Mayella. This made people of her kind call her trash, this would often make Mayella feel powerless. Mayella wasn’t able to speak on her behalf because she is a female. As stated (document “D”), Tom had been accused of lying because of his race they questioned him on why he ran from Mayella when she tried to hug and kiss on him. Mayella couldn’t say anything in her defense when Tom said “she came on to me” all she could do is sit there quietly. She wouldn’t make her case better because they already know she’s lying. She knew that if she was to say something they would catch her in her lies and know her as more than just not classy they would know her as a liar as well.
