The 1953 coup was the event when Britain and with the help of United Stated to bring down the prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mossadegh. Before him, the Shah signed a treaty letting Britain own and have complete control the oil. Once Mossadegh was elected prime minister, he signed a bill which passed as a law which let Iran nationalize and takes back its oil. He planned to free Iran from exploitation from Britain to reclaim what was theirs and get rid of the company. Since Britain owned the oil company, they were outraged with the idea of Mossadgh and tried to negotiate to get 50/50 profit from the oil. First one, was propaganda by using the press and media to "undermine Mossadegh's popularity. Second was to send military officers to dismiss him. Next, was the mobs that they bribed to take over the streets. The mobs along with government officials and civilians were paid to march on the streets and protest and caused riots against the prime minister. Finally, was for General Zahedi, the person United Stated and Britain elected to replace Mossadegh, to accept being prime minister (10). They managed to get Mossadegh under house arrest and overthrown. The reason for the coup in Iran was not to stop them from joining the Soviet Union and stopping the spread of communism. According to Kinzer, "the obvious reason for attacking Iran would be to win access to its vast oil supply" (xi). The real interest was to use Iran as an ally and a vassal (xiii). United States planned to extract oil and build bases on Iran. The 1953 coup was for the Western powers to keep control of the oil and the money they get from it.
