Palina Hornaya Chapters 9 and 10: The French Revolution and Napoleonic Europe Theme: France, although it was one of the most advanced countries in Europe, quickly fell due to the Enlightenment ideas and people’s critical perspective of their government and society. When Napoleon Bonaparte came to power, he ended the revolution through reforms, and created a French Empire. His political unity and great military skills led to more modern and enlightened reforms in Europe. Subtheme: BACKGROUNDS 1.
The Treaty of Tilsit left Napoleon free to turn his attention to Britain, Sweden, and Portugal, which were the two remaining powers that were allies of Britain. It was decided that Russia would be the one to take care of Sweden, while Napoleon told their ports to close Britain and also declare war on them, this marks the beginning of something called “The Peninsular War”, his intention of doing that was to finish the Continental System, because according to Napoleon there was no other way to make Britain make peace than by hitting its trade system. The French Revolution was a major event in history that impacted and changed the course of the world today, and most famous for the executions of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. It helped introduce modern civilization to multiple ideologies such as socialism, liberalism, and even patriotism, as well as reforming the government. With all these great advancements, there’s a pondering question left by many asking what happened to cause this revolution. There were many factors that led up the French Revolution, but one of the many significant causes was the king of France himself. According to the Sixth Document, Causes of the French Revolution, It was said that Louis XVI’s lack of leadership skills made him an ineffective ruler.
The French Revolution was one of the most significant wars that changed France’s history. The Revolution started in 1789 and ended in 1799 and was mainly initiated by the conditions affecting the Third Estate. Louis XVI was predominately the king during this time period but little did he know that an uprising among the peasants was happening. The French Revolution was caused by the Enlightenment ideas because of the American Revolution, the knowledge of rights, and the questioning of France’s government. The American Revolution was basically the “fire” that ignited the change the Third Estate wanted to see in their country.

The writings, philosophies, and theoretical debates among the educated and aristocrats may have small provoking influences but it is the disruption of the individual?s livelihood that is the required source. A publication will create vigorous discussion and debate but take away a bread maker?s ability to bake, destroy the churches and remove religious rights, or force communities into starvation and that is the true trigger of a revolution. In my reflection I would further suggest that had the leadership in France been more fiscally responsible and more responsive to the outcries of the people, the revolution may never have occurred. The American Revolution, ending in 1783, has been seen to have ended in America’s favor. Having succeeded because the power of government was given to the people, the French revolution didn’t end the same. When the French revolution, ending in 1799, was seen to have not succeeded in many of the aspects they were fighting for. Despite the bloodshed, laws, civil rights, and codes were not successfully implemented and did not uphold the ideals for which the people had fought. The Napoleonic Code and Declaration of Rights of Man are also prime examples of how the French Revolution was not able to succeed.
After the French Revolution, a Corsican artillery officer, named Napoleon Bonaparte, became the emperor of France in 1804. After playing a significant role in trying retake the French port of Toulon, occupied by the British, he was appointed general at the age of 26 in 1793. This marked the beginning of the Napoleonic Era, which would change the course of European history for centuries. However, despite claiming to be a strong supporter of the French Revolution, Napoleon mostly undermined the goals of the Revolution by violating the Declaration of the Rights of Man, insisting on returning to principles of the Old Regime in regards to women, the imposition of taxes and the re-establishment of the social elite. Nonetheless, Napoleon still supported the main goals of the Revolution by establishing the Civil Code and supporting the peasantry by lowering bread prices.

After a time of uncertainty in France brought about by the French Revolution, Napoleon restored the stability of France through the military. France had experienced a time of military failure during the 1790’s when other European nations declared war on France. Napoleon emerged in this time as a skilled soldier and tactician.

Furthermore, Napoleon was appointed as a traitor of the republican ideals of the French Revolution, because of the return from the noble principles of the aristocracy.
The French Revolution ended when Napoleon Bonaparte, a military genius, stepped in and dismantled the Directory, which promoted middle class interests, and helped with financial crisis and food shortages. Napoleon crowned himself emperor of France, and made a new social order called the Napoleonic Code. Although there may be many reasons he reversed the spirit of the French Revolution, he modernized and changed the political and social construct immensely, for the good of France. The main trait that Napoleon is known for is his genius military mind.
REFORMED FRANCE AND EUROPE: THE INFLUENCE OF NAPOLEON BONAPARTE Napoleon Bonaparte, a French military leader, was a powerful personality that emerged after the French Revolution erupted in 1789. It was during this time of European chaos when he rose into military leadership and seized political power in France in an event known as the coup of 18 Brumaire (___). It was in 1804 when he crowned himself emperor and expanded his empire by waging wars across Europe that led to massive bloodshed. Though his leadership may be described as filled with contradicting philosophical and political objectives, we can attribute to him significant modern-day government systems. This paper focuses on exploring the several reforms that Napoleon implemented, and how the reform reshaped France and the whole of European continent.
