In Outsiders everyone, even Ponyboy and his gang call Ponyboy’s gang greasers. They were a subculture in the 1950s that originated in America, mostly teenagers were greasers. The name was made because of their greased back hair style. Sometimes the greasers would be called, hood, as in the word hoodlum. Typically greasers would wear black or white T-shirts, ringer T-shirts, baseball and bowling shirts, and many other shirts. Greasers would wear denim, leather jackets, letterman jackets, and many other jackets. They would also wear black or blue jeans, black leather pants, khaki pants, and many others. Another thing in the story that came from the author’s past was the setting. The setting of the story was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the author went to high school and college in Tulsa. S.E. Hinton, the author of Outsiders wrote the book when she was 15 years old in high school. She wrote the book because she did not like it that there was not many pop culture books being made for teens. When she wrote the book at first she was not going to publish it, but one of her friend’s mom read one of the drafts of the book and thought that more people should be read it. Then she called an agent in New York, then the press company, Viking press, signed Hinton for a $1000 advance. When she was going to publish the book Viking press told her to use her initials when getting the book published because she was a girl and because they thought that the reviewers were not even going to read the book if they knew it was by and teenage girl about teenage boys. Some of the theories of the word are, fuzz was taken from the word fuzz, meaning that the police men are always fussy. One theory was that it was just a mispronunciation of the word feds, means Federal Agent. Another theory is that people used the word fuzz is to make fun of the police, it made fun of them because being called fuzzy meant that you were unmanly and soft. Another slang word was, weed, it meant cigarettes, this word could have come from the drug marijuana that was sometimes called weed. People sometimes smoke weed so maybe that is where the word came from. One of the themes that Hinton it trying to put into her story is to not join gangs. This is because there are many bad things that happen to the members of gangs. Bob who was part of a gang died. Jonny, Ponyboy, and Dally all got hurt during the fire that connects to them being in the gang because they would not be at the church if they were not part of the greaser’s gang. Another thing bad that happens to people in gangs in the story is they always get into fights. Another theme in the story is to never give up.
