Many people have shaped the world we live in today. Some are very well known; on the other hand, some are not. There are many people such as Dr. Patricia Bath who have made numerous contributions to the world we live in that do not receive very much attention or gratitude. Imagine not being able to see. Dr. Patricia Bath could not stand the thought of anyone not being able to see. She believed, “Eyesight is a basic human right,” and expressed that she believed nothing should keep you from this right. She worked relentlessly for a cause she believed every human deserved even though she faced numerous challenges. She did not do her work for fame. Rupert Bath, was the first black motorman for the New York City subway system. Her mother,
Gladys Bath, had a domestic job and put all of her earnings to ensure that her children got an education. Bath did not take the chance to learn for granted. She was beyond studious and soon found her passion: science. Bath not only found her passion for science in her childhood, but also decided to dedicate her life to science and medicine after hearing about a doctor in the
Congo who provided services to lepers.
Even though school is a challenge for many, it was not for Patricia Bath. Her hard work and dedication in school did not go unrecognized. Sixteen-year-old Bath was rewarded by becoming one of the few students who got to attend a cancer research workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation. She used her brain in the workshop as well as she did in school. Dr. Robert Bernard was the program head at this workshop. He was so amazed with
