Many people often wonder how slavery came about in the United States. Slaves were most economical while working on huge farms, and intensive cash crops. After the American Revolution, slaves had proven unneeded in the north and were dying out. Slaves were a huge part of life during the 1800ś. The outbreak of the Civil War changed the future of America forever. First and foremost, Slavery in America was a very hard lifestyle. The treatment of slaves and their families was not fair, cruel, and sometimes led to fatal situations. In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tomś Cabin. Uncle Tom, while working for his master, received news he was getting sold. The next day Slave traders came and bought Tom. On his new masters farm, he was treated very badly. He was whipped, beaten, and constantly made fun of. Eventually Tom was beaten so badly he couldn't work anymore. Sadly Uncle Tom passed away. Slavery was not something anybody wanted to be apart of. The slave masters had tiny rooms for them to live in. These rooms were dirt floors, no doors, windows, or bathrooms. It was miserable. Slavery often lead to rebellion. Slaves often tried to run away to a free state. Only a few of them were successful. If you were caught running away, it was often fatal, or very harmful. Masters weren't very nice and tended to use things to their advantages. Family separation was one of the harsh things to do with slavery. Slaves would often have kids. Soon after the children would be sold for money to the master. It was a cruel and harsh environment to live in. Sometimes slaves were often shamed for their religion and what they believed in.
