Impact of Stephen King on American Culture “Get busy living or get busy dying.” - Stephen King. Stephen King is an American author who still lives today. Most of his novels are influenced by what was going on in his life and his own experiences. Many of Kings novels in the 80s are written under Kings alcohol and cocaine addiction which can be seen throughout this period. Kings cocaine addiction is also not a coincidence as this time period experienced an influx of cocaine from colombia and pablo escobar. Another factor that influenced the impact of King's writings was the economic depression of the 1970s and boom of the 80s. One of the novellas is, “1922.” “1922,” is about a family on a farm out in the country (King 2010). The mother of the family wants to move into the city and will take all her land (King 2010). The father decides the only way to stop her is to put her in the grave, and with the help of his son that's exactly what he does (King 2010). They complete the task only to find out that the future was only going to get worst and this was just the beginning (King, 2010). The mood of the story is very gloomy and the happiness of the son deteriorates over time while the father just tries to make the most of the situation which ends up just adding to the overall despair of the atmosphere (King, 2010).
