Who knew planes could fly over a major financial crash! As it turns out, they did. Planes were a new mode of transportation that was introduced by the Wright Brother and was finding its place in the world as most great inventions do. Though as it turns out, it was during the Great Depression this industry flourished and began to integrate into the lives of the american people. Planes were new to the scene and need to fill a demand.
Charles Lindbergh’s was one of the most famous aviators in the 1920s. He was the first human to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Charles was working as a mail pilot before he became a successful aviator. His success had open doors for the aviation industry. I’ll discuss my Charles Lindbergh’s impression, technology, process of navigation and accuracy, and the impact it had on the world of aviation.
The Wright brothers infamous flight at Kittyhawk happened just over a decade prior to the assassination of the Archduke. And up untill the use in the 1911 war between Tyrkey and Libya airplanes were still rather undeveloped, and being used purely for recreation. War lead to an explosion in production and aircraft technology. Two of the major mechanical changes to the aircraft were the propellers being changed from pusher to tractor; meaning that the air was no longer being pushed behind the aircraft, but pulled towards it.
Both inventions led to increased productivity and stimulated American economic development, Henry Ford patented the design and soon began to produce more cars than his competitors. Ford knew that in order to keep his employees satisfied he would have to raise their pay, so he did. From a measly two dollars to five he immediately noticed an increase work ethic , including the price reduction his workers could finally afford the new Model T and now had enough time to use it. This led to an increase in employees and wages, the automobile showed a renewed cultural outlook in America that would soon be spread to all neighboring countries. The invention of the airplane changed the United States forever, it changed the way that Americans would travel making it easy and affordable not to mention that it would help significantly improve the American economy through shipping and distribution.
It became easier for people to listen to these creators once the radio was invented. When Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly nonstop across the Atlantic from New York to Paris in 1928, the radio transformed him into a celebrity overnight. Radio’s were one of the most time changing inventions in this era.
Since people got into the habit of traveling by plane they had to advance the performance of planes. This led to new aircraft machinery that in modern days we still use. Some Americans disagreed with the changes that were happening in the United States such as, new inventions, women saying what's on their mind, new music and much more (“The Roaring Twenties”). But this didn’t hesitate Lindbergh to have a modern and extremist mind set. For instance, Lindbergh went on many exciting trips such as traveling to China with his wife, Anne.
The Airplane was gaining popularity sending mail from coast to coast. When Charles Lindbergh flew his airplane from continent to continent, the airplane was then
State-of-the-art vehicles and systems were being developed that could transport people and cargo in more efficient manners, and new manufacturing systems were able to create these vehicles at a much higher rate. One of these systems was the variable pitch propeller, invented by Wallace Turnbull in 1922. Unlike conventional fixed pitch propellers, this propeller utilized a motor to alter the pitch of the blade and cut through varying amounts of air. This helped the airplane obtain maximum power and thrust on takeoff, and then transition to an economical cruise setting, which, “…Made the air-transport industry possible” (Freeman-Shaw et al. 43). With this invention, aircraft were able to transport considerably greater volumes of people or cargo, which provided significant economic benefits.
As time passed after WWI, fewer people paid attention to airplanes. An example of this is how Eddie Ricken Backen was unable to get a job in aviation after being a WWI ace, he then ended up selling cars. This meant that there needed to be a change of opinion on flying. In order to change the people's mindsets Charles A. Lindbergh flew a plane for thirty-three hours and thirty minutes from New York to France. This was a major achievement and it led him to be known as a genuine hero (Minnesota Historical Society 1).
It actually took them four years to make flying a reality. The Wright brothers impacted our world immensely because they are the only reason that we are able to fly in planes. “Wilbur and Orville Wright were American inventors and pioneers of aviation” (editors). They hand made and flew the first ever airplane. Wilbur was born in Millville, Indiana on April 16th, 1867.
He, therefore, started Hughes Aircraft Company, which produced airplanes and eventually began building and designing aircraft for the Unites States Military. Through this company, Hughes developed the fastest airplane the world had ever known, personally piloting the aircraft and breaking many flight time records. He also designed and built the H-4 Hercules, which was originally intended to be a military plane to transport vehicles during World War II, but turned into a private project due to the military’s cancellation of the aircraft’s production at the end of the war. This plane, after its completion, was the biggest plane in the world at the time. Later on, Howard also started other branches off of Hughes Aircraft, such as, Hughes Helicopters, Hughes Aerospace Group, and Hughes Space and Communications Company, which built the first commercial communications satellite and produced the first successful craft to correctly perform a lunar landing during the NASA Surveyor missions.
Inventors have been changing the fate of the world for many centuries. Though all of them are important, the one inventors that really made a difference were the Wright Brothers. The Wright brothers first achieved a sustainable, working aircraft in 1903 (History.com). Now because of that one inventions many people can efficiently overcome vast distances with ease. Though, there were cars and railroads before airplanes, nothing really compared to the speed they had.
During a period of history when airplane was an unknown word and there was little information on aeronautics, the Wright Brothers explored the science of aviation vastly expanding upon the little known information on flying through experimenting and learning about this new topic. Although they encountered obstacles along the way, they provided a burst of innovation that would help create an age of aviation that forever changed the world then and today. The industrial revolution was a major factor In the Wright brothers pursuing their ideas for flight. The work force was growing, railroads were being expanded, and businesses were becoming more industrialized. Because of this, prices of materials were dropping and becoming more available to all.
This was bringing change into the economic and technological world. One of the inventions was the flying shuttle. The flying shuttle is machine that allowed people who weave to weave much wider fabrics. The flying shuttle could also be mechanised, which led to automatic machines looms. It made weaving a much faster process.
Slowly after the 1900’s different types of planes were being made and they had certain purposes. Big sturdy planes carried a lot of cargo, long thin planes carried passengers. Now almost everybody has rode a plane, it is really an amazing mode of transportation! The Wright Brothers changed the way aerodynamics works by, teaching thousands of pilots how to maneuver a plane.
