Dr. Kerr was born to Americo Caldas Kerr and Barbara de Oliveria Kerr in Santana do Parnaiba, Sao Paulo on 9 September 1922. At 10 years old, his parents noticed a desire towards nature and encouraged him to take up the study of agronomy. Agronomy is, "The science of soil management and the production of field crops." He studied botany (the study of plants), zoology (the study of animals), and French under professor Honorio Jose de Brito. Dr. Kerra's love for science continued to grow and he focused his undergraduate to the study of bees. As for his doctorate, Dr. Kerr continued following his passion for science and bees. He accepted a position as a genetics professor at ESALQ in 1946 and concluded his studies in 1947. Years later in 1958, Kerr resigned from his position at ESALQ. He then transferred to the University of the State of Sao Paulo (UNESP) where he founded the Biology Department. While at UNESP, Dr. Kerr was researching bee genetics. His goal was to discover how he could create a hybrid honey bee and boost Brazil's honey production. His research focused on the European Honey Bee (specifically the Italian Honey Bee) and the African Honey Bee.
