Predictably, tensions between Japan and Russia grew during the year of 1904 as Russia continued to increase pressure both militarily and economically around the area of Port Arthur mainly through building the Trans-Siberian Railway across Manchuria. As the Japanese put forth a compromise to give Russia control over Manchuria and to receive control of Korea, the Russians demanded that the Japanese remove their military force in Korea. This assumption relied on the Russian’s mindset that the Japanese would not go to war with Russia, thus there would be minimal conflict standing in the way of Russia gaining control of both Manchuria and Korea.
