Before Johnny was going he gave Ponyboy his book and left a note that was too late to be discovered. The note said “Stay Gold Ponyboy, Stay Gold!” Meaning stay pure and live life to the fullest, Dally is more of the opposite. The note also said to show Dally the sunset to make him not as mean and to care more about the world and to be more kind. Johnny didn’t know Dally would suicide because of him.
They go out to eat and when they come back they see the church burning and hear that some kids are trapped inside. They burst inside to save the kids even though Dally told them not to. Johnny then broke his back after a piece of the wood fell on him and he went to the hospital he was in critical condition. For the first time greasers were seen as hero's even though the paper read " JUVENILE DELINQUENTS TURN HEROES" ( Hinton page 90 ) While Johnny and Pony were in the church a big fight had been scheduled between the socs and the greasers and if the greasers won socs can't jump them again after the rumble Pony Goes to the hospital to see Johnny and to tell them that they won, but he tells Pony that it is useless and that Pony had to "stay gold" and that meant to preserve one's innocence because Johnny had felt how losing one's innocence can change a person. He then dies, Dally bursts out of the hospital.
Johnny was the one holding the gang together, but when he died it almost separated them. Also because of Johnny dying, it may have been the main reason why Dally
The church that Johnny and Ponyboy stayed in burnt down. Thus, Johnny died. Although they share a great deal of similarities the movie and novel are very different.
The kids head to Dally’s to pick up some supplies before they run out of state to avoid being caught. They catch the 3 am train to Windrixville and hide in an abandoned church for a couple days. This turns out to be deadly because while they are about to leave the church waith Dally days later, it becomes ablaze with many little kids inside. Johnny and Pony do the heroic action of going in and saving the kids but in the end Johnny gets hit with a plank that falls and ultimately succumbs to his injuries adding to the countless examples of how violent actions will only deepen the hole of conflict and cause more

Dally loved Johnny more than anything in the world. Johnny was the only one he cared for and whoever messed with him that person is messing with Dally. Johnny and PonyBoy were in a lot of trouble when Johnny killed that Soc so Dally was kind enough to give them some supplies. Dally was a hero because he saved Johnny and PonyBoy from a difficult situation and always looked after

When Dally visits he tells them about a rumble between the Soc and the Greasers. On the way back Johnny suffers severe burns and a broken back from saving kids from the church. He soon later died after Dally and Ponyboy visited him after the rumble. Dally got upset and robbed a store then got shot down by the cops. Ponyboy got a head injury and was sick and was in the hospital for a few days.
It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine. They have more to live for” (178). When Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally are going back to the church to hide out, they see it is on fire. Heroically, Johnny runs into the church.
Which Johnny basically “worshipped” Dally. One example says, “Leave her alone Dally!” and Dally responded “huh” as he was caught off guard by it, which isn’t a surprise because Dally was Johnny’s hero. This is showing acts of being a hero by Johnny sticking up to even his best friend, to be a hero. By doing this he earned respect, and gained new friends.

How could anyone imagine not having a best friend? Johnny’s choices impact Ponyboy by, saving the kids from the burning church, killing the soc bob, and sending Ponyboy a letter. The night of the church broiling into flames, Johnny and Ponyboy had already been out of the church when it first started. “I bet we started it,” Ponyboy says to Johnny,”we must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something.”
After that, Ponyboy finds himself in a situation that he personally can’t back out of. It’s the fire at the church. Ponyboy, starts running in to help save the children, but when he turns around, he sees Johnny. “Hey Ponyboy,” Johnny says. Johnny was following Ponyboy into the fire to help save the kids.
(1.48) After Johnny died, Dally makes an enormous sacrifice that took away his life. He loved Johnny so much that he couldn't take the fact he was gone. Dally was known to be the most cold-blooded member of the gang but after Johnny's death, he was the one who showed the most affection. Dally wouldn’t have been shot if he didn’t love Johnny so much, and sacrificed himself.
