The Civil War was a war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. The Civil War was when America broke up and went to war with each other. More than 620,000 were killed and millions were injured. The main reason it started was because of slavery. Southern states seceded from the Union because they wanted slavery, they had different economics, and they didn't want any more compromises. Southern states seceded from the Union because they wanted slavery. “Many Northerners viewed slavery as wrong. Abolitionists wanted to end slavery and some helped slaves escape to the North and Canada. The Southerner’s believed that they were stealing their properties.” (Doc 4) The quote above shows that Northerners and Southerners had different views on slavery and had disagreements about it. It also shows that the Southerner got frustrated with the north because they thought the north was stealing their properties. “The Compromise of 1850 introduced into Congress by Henry Clay was designed to settle the slavery question arising from the new western lands acquired after the Mexican War. The Compromise gave some satisfaction to both North and South,”(Doc 1). The 36 - 30 line states that any new states under that line was a slave state and anything over it is a free state and then The Compromise of 1850 said people can vote whether there state is a slave or free state which is called popular sovereignty. By doing this they completely ignored the 36 - 30 line which made Southerners angry and they didn't want anymore compromises. Southerners didn't want anymore compromises because they wanted things to be in there
