The Constitution of the United States of America has been an eminent document in our country’s past, present, and future. More than any other document, it has shaped our country today. The Constitution was not, however, just written out of someone’s own thoughts, rather there were documents, bills, ideas, and people from near centuries of the Constitution that guided the Constitution to become the illustrious transcription it is in this era. The Constitution was formed from ideas John Locke, Baron de Montesquieu, the English Bill of Rights, the Magna Carta, and the English Parliament; who combined had the key ideas that the Constitution has held for centuries. Montesquieu’s ideas clashed with Locke’s, as Montesquieu believed that never changing laws would reduce the problems of society. He also observed many governing societies and concluded that there are three types of governments: a monarchy, ruled by a king or queen, a republic, ruled by an elected leader, and a despotism, ruled by a dictator. He strongly believed a republic government, a government that allows the citizens to vote for the leader, would be the best for having a stable country, and he also favored the separation of powers, just as Locke had. Montesquieu took inspiration from England’s government at the time for this idea, as they had separation between king, parliament, and court, which the United States adapted with their three branches of government. Despite Montesquieu’s governmental beliefs, he opposed the idea that all men are equal, unlike John Locke. Montesquieu’s views on government and society were unique to the time, and had an impact on both France and the United States less than a century
