The Cold War and the Fall of the Soviet Union Did the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union (USSR) affect US history? I believed that it did and it helped to craft US history. Without the fall of the USSR, the US would not be the superpower that it is today. During the 1940s-1990s, the USA and the USSR fought a war called the Cold War. In this war, the fighting was indirect. Rather the wars were divided up into many proxy wars. The two sides were fighting for two different government beliefs. The USA was fighting for a democratic, capitalist government while the USSR was fighting for a communist government. During the Cold War, each of the two countries wanted to expand their influence to as many countries as they could. During the Cold War, the countries were either a “First World Country,” a capitalist ally of the US, a “Second World Country,” a communist ally of the USSR, or a “Third World Country,” a country that was neutral. The first region I will be explaining is the Americas. In the Americas, most of the countries were “First World.” The USA, Canada, and Mexico were all First World countries. Over time, the USA was able to topple the communist countries in Central America. In Cuba, however, the USA did attempt to stop the country from turning communist. Eisenhower’s “Bay of Pigs” invasion, however, failed miserably. To this day, Cuba still remains a communist country. All in all, most of the countries in the Americas were “First World.” The second region to mention will be Europe. In Europe, there was a huge “border” defining which countries were communist and which ones were capitalist. This was called the “Iron Curtain.” As Churchill once stated, “An Iron Curtain has descended on Europe.” The split was between Eastern Europe and Western Europe. Eastern Europe was aligned with the Soviets while Western Europe was allied with the USA. Both had influences on their section of Europe. The final region is Asia and Southwest Asia. The events of the Cuban Missile Crisis would cause the relationship between the USA and Cuba to change. Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev would contribute to the end of the USSR. After the USSR collapsed, the USA would be the only remaining superpower in the world. Without the Cold War, the USA would not be where it is today. The USA would not be as powerful, and very well may not be the sole superpower. Thanks to the Cold War, it transformed the USA to the only superpower in the
