To begin, the Great Depression took a great toll on the typical American man. Many got fired from their jobs causing unemployment. It was almost impossible to get another job so they were stuck living with no money at all. Not having money caused most men to struggle with bills. Because they couldn’t pay bills they went into debt. Having no money, Americans had to borrow money from the bank, which did not help Americans with their debt. Overall, the Great Depression affected everyone in America in some way shape or form. Furthermore, due to the Great Depression the Braddock family was forced to make adjustments. Like most Americans at the time, Jimmy Braddock lost his job. Boxing was his only income of money along with jobs he got on the docks once in a while. Even though the family was struggling to pay bills and buy food they refused to split up. Their decision is what helped them get through the Great Depression. Since the family did not split up they were able to support each other. Instead of facing all of the problems of the time separately they did it together. Along with being able to depend on each other, Mr. and Mrs. Braddock were still able to have a strong marriage. Because of their marriage they were able to make rational decisions together. They were also able to support each other with whatever choices they had to make. Jimmy was also able to look to Mae for support when he had to fight to make money. Another advantage of the family staying together is Jimmy Braddock was able to see his family as inspiration to win his fights. Whenever Jimmy wanted to give up he would think of how his family has struggled through the Great Depression. Doing this helped Jimmy remember what he was fighting for in the first place.
