Eli Winker Dr Knickman SST150 9 February 2023 Comparing Classical Greece and Han China In the Classical Age, the Han and Greek empires differed in many ways, most notably in their government ideas and the power of one individual in a government. The classical Greeks used democracy as their primary form of government and citizens all had a role in the government. The Han empire used a monarchy with an emperor at the head and everyone else in the empire had little to no power. Although the Classical Greeks and Chinese shared similar ideas about the role of women in society, their ideas about government and the role of an individual in government were more different than similar because the Greeks believed in more of a democratic government rather

The clash between these civilizations echoes throughout history and has shaped our world in countless ways. Citizenship started way back in these two city-states near the Mediterranean Sea. During the Persian War, Empedocles’s belief that 4 elements make up our universe and Aeschylus’s the odyssey both reveal that the current Greek Ideal was that truth was outside of man, but concrete and touchable. The Greeks united together to face the common enemy of Persia in the Persian war. During the Persian war everything seemed to be defined by very “concrete” lines; the Greeks were considered to be “good” and the Persians were considered to be “evil”. The unity of Greece lead to the belief that the individual was not as important as humanity as a whole. Individualism was trivialized in this period leading to the belief that truth was outside of humanity.

The Babylonian Empire is also significant in biblical history. In 586 BCE, the Babylonians, under Nebuchadnezzar II, conquered the Kingdom of Judah and deported a significant number of Jews to Babylon. This period, known as the Babylonian Captivity or the Babylonian Exile, lasted for several decades until the Persians conquered Babylon and allowed the Jews to return to their homeland. The Babylonians had a polytheistic belief system and worshiped many gods and goddesses. It influenced their religion by earlier Mesopotamian cultures, such as the Sumerians and Akkadians.
These new ideas emphasized the spiritual concerns of people instead of focusing on the concerns that were going on in the towns and cities. Another way that Hellenism spread after the conquests of Alexander was because the people of power in some of the states that Alexander conquered believed that they could gain even more power if they adopted Hellenistic culture. This was true for leaders in Egypt, Syria, Judea, Rome, Carthage, and Africa. The spreading of Hellenism during and after Alexander 's conquest greatly changed the Mediterranean, and brought a very different culture to a different part of the world, which helped bring about new ideas and inventions. Judea, Rome, and Carthage all had very different reactions as Hellenistic culture spread; some embraced it with open arms and for others wanted no part of it at all.

As the attractions of Hellenistic culture proved irresistible, the struggle over how much to Hellenize led to a civil war among the Jews of Judea. Without the intention of being exposed to Hellenism, the Jewish people living in the center of Hellenism were immersed into Greek-like civilization. For many reasons, this way of life seemed appealing to people offered it, for the fascinating Greek life was blended into each individuals part of the kingdom and their origins. The main idea of Hellenism is that it teaches its participants how to live the good life.

And, the minority of people throughout the empire who were Roman citizens were intensely proud of this privilege. Strong political ideals and interests created some similarities between Greco- Roman society and the Confucian values of classical China, although the concept of active citizenship was distinctive in the Mediterranean cultures. However, Greece and Rome did not develop a single or cohesive set of political institutions to rival China's divinely sanctioned emperor or its elaborate bureaucracy. So in addition to political intensity and localism as characteristics of Mediterranean civilization, we must note great diversity in political forms.
