In 1929, the stock market crashed significantly and caused widespread unemployment and poverty. The Great Depression began in 1929 and did not begin to end until 1939. Most states were not fully recovered until the mid-1940s. During the Great Depression, people had to stand in long lines just to get essentials. The economy was in a huge decline, and many people lost their homes and jobs from this. This was a hard time for all families during this time, but everyone survived it by making changes to the economy and government. When President Hoover was in charge, the United States started to decline and by the next election, the new president was Franklin D. Roosevelt. During his time in office, he started many projects to help stabilize the economy and provide jobs for the people who needed them or lost their jobs due to the economy. Roosevelt created the New Deal to help the United States have a quicker recovery from the Great Depression (History.com Editors). Towards the end of the Great Depression, World War II started and countries had to prepare themselves for what was about to come their way. To create more supplies and make more money, some of these countries have left the gold standard. The fiscal expansion was created and this allowed more jobs to be created to help with poverty, homelessness, and unemployment. In the United States, they saved up money to spend on new supplies for the military in World War 2 (Romer and Pells). In summary, the Great Depression was a devastating economic crisis that occurred in the 1930s. It was triggered by the stock market crash of 1929 and then led to widespread unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and a decline in production.
