Creoles, the old main class in Latin America that led to Latin America to its independence from spain, BUT WHY did they lead the fight for independence. in the 1400s and 1500s Spain was the most powerful country and made colonies in Latin America (LA).In the late 1700s Spain was one of the most powerful countries and had control over Latin America. LA was made up of various social classes. The main two at the top were the Peninsulares and the Creoles. The Peninsulares were the Spaniards that moved to LA and held all the political power and had the best jobs. The Creoles were the ones that descended from the original conquistadors and had all the jobs that were great had were rich, but they had no power in politics. The Peninsulares had most of any job that included LA’s government so this wouldn’t let the Creoles make any decisions for LA, just the Peninsulares.This didn’t make the Creoles happy. According to Howard, J, Wiarda “The Creoles had growing economic and social influence but the peninsulares monopolized all administrative positions” (Document B). This shows that the Creoles had social influence but couldn't be part of anything administrative because of the Peninsulares. According to Simón Bolívar “We are disputing with the natives for titles of ownership, and at the same time we are struggling to maintain ourselves in the country that gave us birth against the opposition of the invaders” (Document A). Simon Bolivar is a Creole and said this as a speech. This quote shows that the Creoles new that it was unfair for them that they weren’t able to have political power. The Creoles could only buy and sell from Peninsulares which allowed them to exploit the Creoles. Ending up with the Creoles selling things for low prices and buying things for high prices. We see this stated in the letter from the Creole, Juan Pablo Viscardo. “We in America are perhaps the first to be forced by our own government to sell our products at artificially low prices and buy what we need at artificially high prices. This is the result of the Spanish commercial monopoly System, combined with taxes and official fees” (Document C). According to this the Creoles knew they were being exploited. Another Economic reason the Creoles fought Spain was that they took advantage of a shortage in food. According to Alan Knight this is written. “In 1808-09 drought produced a great mortality among Mexico's livestock and decimated destroyed the harvest....” “Creole elites, indignant and threatened, now sought to capitalize on these social tensions.” This shows the Creoles using a Drought as a way to attack the government.
