Alyssa Guzman- The Preamble’s Impact Today On a daily basis, Americans benefit from one historical document without ever realizing it. The U.S Constitution was written in 1778 by a group of people in order to establish America’s government, and give citizens basic rights (The U.S Constitution). The most memorable part of this document is the first paragraph, which is known as the Preamble. The Constitution is often compared to the Declaration of Independence which granted America freedom from England. The Preamble to the Constitution is more compelling than the Declaration for Americans today because it recognizes the citizen’s freedom, guarantees to protect them from war, and confirms that the government will not have too much power. The Preamble states that the reason the Constitution is being written is, “in order to form a more perfect union (Constitution).” This document did end up creating a better government because overall our government is very fair and does not have too much power over the people. “It set up our federal (national) government, as well as the government's relationship with the states and citizens. Amendments--which were added later--spell out important changes, including guarantees of Americans' rights (The U.S Constitution).” The writer’s of the Constitution did not want the U.S government to have the same control as it did in England because citizens were often overpowered by the government there. This is why they make sure to state that the government will have a good relationship with citizens, and will not end up harming them in the long run. The thirteen original colonies had established a government that had limited power, and wanted to keep it this way (The U.S Constitution). This shows that this has been a very important part of America from the start, and that the writer’s of the constitution intended to keep it that way.
