One voice would be singing a melody as an instrument would act as accompaniment. This instrument would most commonly be a harpsichord, organ or lute. The monody is still used in music today. The Camerata disliked polyphony because it distorted the clarity of the text. For similar reasons, counterpoint also was not desirable by the group. The music lacked “affection” when counterpoint was present. The group decided to have the melody be present solely in one voice because emotion can be portrayed clearer by a person’s voice rather than through in instrument.
