In this article, the author, Edmund S. Morgan discussed how witch trials became an issue in the Salem Village which dispersed to other towns. The witch trials were well known in the sixteenth century. In the beginning, Morgan stated “the trials occurred at a time when the people of Massachusetts were passing through a very difficult time.” (Morgan, 47) The author clearly wanted to inform the readers that Massachusetts was already in a rough state to begin with until the witch trials came along.

This tragedy led to 19 hangings and one man being pressed to death in colonial Massachusetts. However, while it was so horrible and gruesome, it had a few national benefits. The most well-known benefit is that it helped completely reshape the American social conscience.
Religion affects what people believe, therefore, puritans were religious and believed there was a God and Devil. Their belief had eventually come to the Devil had arisen upon Salem. Reverend Parris speculates there may be a Devil upon Salem after the unexplainable sickness Betty obtained in act one. “Parris: A wide opinion’s running in the parish that the Devil may be among us…” Eventually everyone began to believe there were witches that work with the Devil. In the winter of 1692,trouble began in the village of Salem in The Massachusetts Bay Colony. According to my research it explains,it started with nine year old Betty Parris started acting weird. She would hide under chairs,flap her arms and jerk around. She would also blabble saying words no one could understand.
Nearly anyone from the New England has heard of the famous Salem Witch Trials. A year of persecution, leading to the accusation of nearly 200 citizens of all ages. No one was safe; men, women, children, even pets stood trial and 20 were hung for the supposed crime of witchcraft (Blumberg). 1692 was a year of witch hunting. Most today blame the trials on hysteria, or perhaps a bad case of paranoia.
Even though at that time the Puritan's strong religious belief was that anyone practicing witchcraft was to be killed, there was no proof that any witches were actually in Salem during this time. The Salem witch trials are infamous for the horrible things that happened in Salem during 1692. The Salem witch trials was an awful part of American history but it helped to show the founding fathers what was necessary to improve the justice system.
In addition to the many different views of witchcraft, be it positive or the negative, from various communities throughout the years, one also has to consider the impact it has left through the course of history. A well-known impact or event that concerns witchcraft is the Salem Witch Trials. It was an event that lead to hearings, persecutions, and accusations of people that were said to be dealing with witchcraft. When witchcraft was discovered in Salem, Franklin Mixon states, “No fewer than six other ministers soon came to Salem… idle superstition was not permitted, and "spectral evidence" was admitted in court by the ministers who served as counsel and jurists in the proceedings which would follow (Starkey 1963, 28-29)” (Mixon, pg.2).
The Salem Witchcraft Trials had many effects on the town of Salem, Massachusetts. A lot of the effects were negative, destroying the community, government, even individuals. The Witch Trials affected the community of Salem in multiple ways. The witch trials created many tensions between several families in the town. The most acknowledgeable dispute from the play was between the Putnam’s and the Nurse’s.
Not many people know much about what actually happened in the Salem Witch Trials. Maybe someone would think that it was just about witchcraft and crazy people being hanged, but it is a lot more than that. The Salem Witch Trials only occurred between 1692 and 1693, but a lot of damage had been done. The idea of the Salem Witch Trials came from Europe during the “witchcraft craze” from the 1300s-1600s. In Europe, many of the accused witches were executed by hanging.
The Salem witch trials was one of the most absurd and tragic events in history of pre-colonial America. A fine example of how believing in accusations and hearsay could affect a lot of people in a short span of time. the justice system is flawed and prejudice was allowed to reign over the people. I found this topic very interesting even though it is one of the most regretted in history. I’ve always been the type of person who likes reading all those weird and peculiar things on the internet.
