Many economists trace the start of the Great Depression back to the 1929 stock market crash in the United States. This impacted the United States in a major way causing many laborer’s to find themselves jobless. There was a dramatic drop in trade, income and taxation that was felt by every country in the world. In the United States the unemployment rate reached 25%. Put in perspective this means that 1 in 4 people during the 1930’s had no form of income.
The great depression was a very hard time for almost all Americans. In 1930 there were 5 million people unemployed and it was up to 13 million by the end of 1932 in America. Almost all of America was classified as poor and didn’t have a living wage and most of America was falling apart. The three most impactful reasons that the Great Depression happened in the United States was because of the stock market crash, unregulated banking institutions, and overextension of credit/excess consumerism.

People had lost jobs, markets went bad, banks had shut down, and unemployment rate has gone up. It had lasted from 1929-1939. During the next several years, buyer spending and investment had dropped, causing a decline in industrial output and raising the unemployment level. It began with the stock market crash on October 29 1929, which had lost millions of investors, markets had lost $30 billion dollars in two days, making it ten times more than the annual budget the U.S had spent for WWI, and prices were dropping until the end of November.

Many people lost their jobs and that made them go to their local banks and withdraw their money, but the banks did not have their money, all the people that wanted there money back lost it all because the bankes went broke. The great depression was a moment of complete turmoil for all who lived in the United States. Throughout a course of four years over thirteen million Americans found themselves jobless, homeless, and doing anything they could to attempt to provide their families with a single meal. Forced out of their homes, tents and cars became the new family dwelling, popping up wherever the slightest hope for work could be found. The idea of a future disappeared as marriages and children were no longer a conceivable object. Men once the bread winners of the family were overcome with shame and humiliation as providing for their families became nearly impossible.
The goals we set for ourselves are often the hardest to achieve. This is due to the fact that many people are concerned with how others perceive them, and often set much higher goals than are reasonable. In addition, personal goals often stem from an internal need; no goals are achieved without drive and purpose, which only come from within. The Space Program of the 1960s is an example of a self-prescribed goal.
The majority of people made under 2,000 dollars a year (Document 9) which was considered the bare minimum to live off of, the buy all of the basic essentials. These people didn’t have any money to spend on luxury items and couldn’t buy on credit. During this time, some companies priced their goods at a higher price than the majority of people made in a year, like boats that were priced anywhere from 10,000 dollars to 35,000 dollars (Document 8). With nobody to buy from them, these businesses were left without a profit and began going bankrupt. An average family before the depression with two people working full time jobs only made around twenty dollars a week (Document 7).
The great depression was the worst economic recession in the history of the industrialized world. Majority of the population was homeless and starving. People were running out of food and there were very limited number of jobs. Whenever a job came available, people were forced to move to support their families. The struggles and adversities citizens were obligated to face was unreal.
