The United States was one of the first empires to industrialize. During the pivotal period of 1850-1914, the U.S. experienced transformations by forces of industrialization and imperialism. The goal of U.S. industrialization was to gain wealth and power. Industrialization of the U.S. encouraged its empire building. During this period, the United States made significant progress at becoming sustainable, however it continued to face difficulties. The United States began industrialization around the 18th century. It was one of the first empires to begin this process, beaten only by northwestern Europe. The United States had the goal of making their empire strong and sustainable. Originally the U.S. was a British colony, but eventually it was considered its own empire with its own colonies. The U.S. imperialism had a main focus of expanding westward with the act of taking land inhabited by the Native Americans. For this the U.S. used settler colonialism, and incorporated the land they took from the west into their official nation. However, imperialism of the U.S. also included taking overseas land, such as Puerto Rico and the Philippines, these colonies were not considered a part of the U.S. nation. Instead, these colonies faced exploitation of both people and materials. The main goal of Imperialism for the United States was to gain a market for its goods and raw materials. To justify these goals, the U.S. used ideologies like religion and race. Religiously, the Americans used Manifest Destiny in order to spread the ideals of democracy, liberty, and equality.
