1 Introduction

The Vietnam War was a brutal 20 year war which took place from 1955- 1975. The Vietnam War is one of the most brutal wars in history. This is because the largest amount of bombs were dropped, the war also had a lot chemical weapons used in the war. It is very interesting to see the affect it has on Vietnam 33 years later.
The Vietnam War caused a lot of political and economic destruction not to forget the humongous destruction it has caused to society, mentally and physically.
I picked to write about the Vietnam war because after living in a Vietnamese society for 4 years, I wanted to learn more and really find out the in depth details of Vietnam and the reason for society being how it was when living in Vietnam.

Vietnam has been under the rule of the Chinese and has been a colony of the French. Vietnam was separated into two from 1945-1975. ‘Vietnam belonged to Imperial China from 111BC to 939 AD.’ Vietnam then belonged to France from 1858-1941, in Vietnam to this day you can see influences in the culture from being under the rule of France. Then came the First Indochina War in 1945- 1954 and after that the Second Indochina War started. The First Indochina War was between Vietnam and France, this was also the cause for the Second Indochina War as this caused Vietnam to get a leader and that led to the second Indochina war. The second Indochina War lasted from 1954-1975, the war was the most bombed war as never before had there been so many bombs used in one war. In Vietnam you can see influences of its history very well, you can see the Chinese Buddhism and superstition. You can see France from the baguettes you can buy from any corner in Vietnam. You can also see the impact of both Indochina wars very heavily in Vietnam.

3 Reasons for the war
3.1 The initial reason
There were many reasons for the Vietnam War and there were many new reasons along the way as the war lasted 20 years. The initial reason being the cold war, this caused Vietnam to separate into 2 sides, the communist and the democratic side. The communist side (North Vietnam) was led by Ho Chi Minh and the democratic side (South Vietnam) was led by Ngo Dinh Diem. ‘It was also ‘behind the scenes’ between America and the USSR. America was heavily involved in the war and the USSR was giving weapons to help the communist Vietnam.’
3.2 Links to the cold war
The Vietnam War is heavily linked to the cold war as it was related to democratic Vietnam and communist Vietnam. This is the reason for America, the USSR and France for joining the Vietnam War. America and France was for the democratic Vietnam and USSR was helping the communist Vietnam by supplying weapons through China.
