In the early morning hours of June, 17 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic Nation Committee in the Watergate office building. When reporters from the Washington Post they discovered that some were former employees of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President. It was also found out that they had been paid by the reelection committee for the break-in. The Watergate scandal caused a great distrust of Nixon and his administration. Out of the Watergate break-in there came two different scandals. One scandal came from the general abuse of power involving the White House and the Nixon campaign committee. The other scandal stemmed from the way the Nixon administration tried to manage the investigations for the Watergate break-in. While there was never any conclusive evidence that the president orchestrated the break-in, there was evidence that he was that he was involved in efforts to obstruct the investigation. Due to the scandals members of Nixon’s administration that had been implicated resigned. Nixon continued to insist that he had no part in the Watergate scandal. The American people realized that our politicians can be dishonest. This lead to American citizens asking for more transparency in politics. Watergate changed the way the American people looked at the government. They were no longer trusting of the government and began to question it. This caused the American people to begin to vote differently. Many Americans started to vote by looking at how the person communicates, their physical appearance and by listening and looking for honesty in the candidates for public
