How Did The Witches Cause Macbeth's Downfall

Robert G. Innersole once said,” Temptations are as thick as the leaves of the forest, and no one can be out of the reach of temptation unless he is dead.” In the play Macbeth a man named Macbeth is given a prophecy by witches indicating he will be king. Macbeth then tells his wife about the prophecy and in turn she suggests that he kills the current king. After continuous fighting he kills the king and becomes king. However, in the end he is killed by Mac duff, a friend of Duncan, and then Malcolm, the son of the former king, becomes king. Macbeth’s downfall was clearly caused by the witches. The witches introduced him to the prophecies in the beginning of the play. They spoke to him of what he would become and the things he would gain. The witches said,”All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!/All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!/All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”(1.3. 51-53) Without the witches in the story to introduce the prophecy to him he would have neverbecomee king and died. Secondly, the witches' prophecy helped push Lady Macbeth, his wife, to make him kill king Duncan. After hearing the witches prophecy Lady Macbeth suggests the idea that Macbeth should kill Duncan. Macbeth listens and kills Duncan, Macbeth then because insane and that leads to his downfall. Some might say that it was caused by Lady Macbeth, fate, or Macbeth’s tragic flaws. They might say its Lady Macbeth’s fault because she pushed him to kill Duncan which caused him to become a tyrant. However, they are wrong Macbeth had his own choice to kill Duncan. Macbeth isn’t controlled by Lady Macbeth, he has his own thoughts and actions. If anything, he killed Duncan because he thought of what the prophecy where he would be king that the witches told him. Some might say that it is fate because everything happens for a reason. In reality we all have the free will to do whatever we want. For example, someone can tell me in the future that someday I will be a teacher. But, I can control what I do and I chose to be a doctor instead of a teacher. Fate isn’t real if you can overcome it. Finally, someone might say its Macbeth’s fault because a tragic flaw of his was cowardlinesss. They might say this because in the beginning of the play he was submissive character towards Lady Macbeth and always tried to get rid of everyone because the witches prophecies told him to beware of them. On the other hand, Macbeth would not be considered a coward because he was a tyrant that ruled over the kingdom with hatred and malicious acts.
