Equality Implemented in Public Schooling, Founded by Thomas Jefferson
A free public education, a fantastic opportunity for economic and educational success of students is currently taken for granted by students and parents alike. The origin of a free education came from founding father, Thomas Jefferson who laid the foundation of a public education for the modern day. Thomas Jefferson advocated for public schools in his bill, A bill for the more general diffusion of knowledge, which influenced education in Colonial and modern day times through his economic, social and political ideas. The Colonial era was filled with economic triumphs regarding the education of children. One of which was the emphasis on a student’s societal benefits as an American citizen. In 1689 the Pennsylvania Assembly Act was passed, which prompted Quakers to acquire the belief that all students were entitled to an education, which included students of different sexes, races, and monetary statuses. This idea was revolutionary since mostly rich boys received an education prior to this notion. Jefferson advocated for an equal education for individuals despite their economic statuses, in his bill, Jefferson stated, “That they should be called to that charge without regard to wealth, birth or other accidental condition or circumstance” (Jefferson, (1904-5), p. 2). Jefferson’s idea that all students were entitled transferred to the future, partially resolving a much debated topic of allowing minorities and girls into public schools.
