William Buckland was first man to scientifically name dinosaurs. Before him, others had found dinosaur bones but “their true significance remained obscure” (Chamberlain). The first dinosaur to be scientifically named was the Megalosaurus. After Buckland named this dinosaur, he opened the door for other scientists to research and name other dinosaurs found. His motivation began by his love and passion for geology and the sciences. He had a vast collection of fossils that he would share with those he taught (Chamberlain). He was not the first to discover dinosaur bones, but was the first to research and name them scientifically.
