Born August 18, 1774; Meriwether Lewis was an American explorer, soldier, politician, public administrator, and the leader of the Louisiana expedition group known as the Corps of Discovery. During the first few years of his life, Meriwether grew up on his family’s estate in Ivy Creek, Virginia. After the death of Meriwether’s father in 1779, Meriwether’s mother Lucy Meriwether remarried to John Marks who later moved the family to Broad River Valley, Georgia in 1780. At his new home, Meriwether was influenced by his love for natural history and spent most of his time improving his skills as an outdoorsman, and it is said that he would go out hunting with his dogs at the age of eight. In May 1577, a man named, John White” sailed on the ship Aid, as part of an expedition to America. The trip was commanded by Martin Frobisher. The reason for the trip was so that he could find precious metals, and a northwest passage to Asia. White sailed to Greenland and Baffin Island trying to find a new passageway. After many months he realized there wasn’t a northwest passage, nor were there any precious metals to be found.
It was on February 28, 1803 that President Thomas Jefferson won Congressional approval for the expedition of the Western lands that would become the adventures of Merriwether Lewis and William Clark.(1) A budget of $2,500 was allotted for the expedition of the group who were dubbed “The Corps of Discovery” by Jefferson. Jefferson was extremely interested in the western lands, so much so that his personal library at his home, Monticello, had more books on the subject than any other library in the world. (2) The group were to be led by Jefferson’s secretary, Merriwether Lewis, and Lewis’ friend William Clark.

Meriwether Lewis was born in Ivy, Virginia in 1774. William Clark was born in Caroline County, Virginia in 1770. In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson asked Lewis to act as his private secretary. President Jefferson offered Lewis another offer. This offer was to lead an expedition to the western part of Mississippi.
This is, what I believe, sparked his imagination and became his inspiration for conservation with the national structures. After this trip, he collected numerous birds from Egypt and Syria, which he put into his sanctuaries. He even turned his room into a virtual zoological lab. In Pauline Watts excerpt, “Science, Religion, and Columbus’s Enterprise of the Indies,” she begins by stating that the idea that Columbus was a scientific innovator might not be entirely true. She then proceeds to present the fact that his “Enterprise of the Indies” which got him his approval to sail drew from many older sources which would point to the fact that he is not as big an innovator as we are led on to believe. The two main sources he supposedly used were the Imago Mundi by Pierre d’Ailly and a group of letters written by Paolo Toscanelli which both stated something related to riches being “reached by sailing west rather than by traveling overland to the east” (15). William Clark was known for the great Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was born on August 1,1770 in Caroline County, Virginia, and died on September 1, 1838. He lived with his father, William Clark III; his mother, Ann Rogers Clark; and his older brother, George Rogers Clark, who was Revolutionary war hero. At the age of nineteen, Clark entered the military. He first served in the militia and then entered the U.S. Army.
The Louisiana Purchase was an 828,000,000 square mile amount of land that the United States bought from France. This purchase doubled the size of the U.S. At the time the deal was made the U.S. had no idea what was on the other side of the country. Thomas Jefferson organized an expedition to explore the land. There were four people that were extremely instrumental in helping with exploration of the west. The people were William Clark, Meriwether Lewis, Sacagawea, and Zebulon Pike.
In the early 1800’s President Thomas Jefferson requested money from Congress to explore the trans-Mississippi west, however this expedition was intended to explore land which would become part of the United States through the Louisiana purchase. This plan for exploration included Jefferson’s secretary, Meriwether Lewis. Lewis selected William Clark to be his co-captain throughout the trip. Jefferson’s main goals were to have the new lands’ fit his commercial and military needs. He hoped that a northwest passage would be found to make an easier access to the Pacific Ocean.
