The relationship between countries wavered. By the end of 1918 the German Kaiser was deposed and sent into exile, the Russian TSAR was executed by revolutionaries. The WWI was indeed a global war, what began as a relatively small conflict in Southeast Europe became a war between European Empires. Britain's entry made this a truly global conflict, never seen before. Germany invaded Belgium and so, standing by its promise to stick up for Belgium, Britain declared war on Germany. The world was at war. People thought it would be over soon and felt that Britain would win being very powerful. However, things did not end the way it seemed. The war was very different from conflicts of the past. For the first time, powerful new weapons and vehicles were used, at sea, land and air. The largest battle of WWI was the battle of the Somme, which was one of the bloodiest in history fought by the French and British against Germans on both sides of river Somme in France. It was the first time a tank was used in combat. Pigeons and Hawks were used to carry messages and Hawks were trained by Germans to kill any carriers pigeons they saw. The war guilt clause of the treaty made Germany responsible for making compensations to the Allied nations in payment for the losses and damages they had sustained in the war , failing which strict and severe action would be taken towards Germany. The treaty aimed at making sure that Germany would never pose a military threat to the rest of Europe and the treaty had a number of demands to guarantee this aim. The treaty included the covenant of the League of Nations , in which the members made certain each other's independence and territorial integrity. The main terms of the treaty were that Germany had to pay a huge amount for the loss of the damage caused by the war. Further they were only allowed to have a small army and 6 naval ships. The treaty ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers, which was signed exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that directly led to WWI. Although the war ended by November 1918 , it took 6 months of Allied negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude the peace treaty.
