World War II was a major historical event that affected many peoples lives. When the War first started it was in the United States best interest not to be a part of it. Everyone remembered the effects of World War I and thought it was better to stay out of it. After a while the United States began to support their allies while they kept their people out of the combat zone. The United States view changed on December 7th, 1941, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States began to get involved in the war. The amount of American men and women who were enlisted in a branch of the military sky rocketed. The United States used draft laws to help build their military. He first shows this by talking about the gifts he got his mom and explaining his desire to try and find something for his dad. John had been working overseas on plane engines to help end a devastating war, yet he was still concerned with sending his parents gifts. Another aspect of the letter that shows John cared was when he talked about his parents’ crops. Even after being away for three years John was aware that the weather would be affecting his parents’ crops and takes time to acknowledge this and write his deepest apologies for not being able to be there for silo. John taking the time to write his deepest apologies and his concerns for his parents shows that he cares. Showing that he cares is an important rhetorical aspect of Johns letter because it helps show his parents that he is still himself. Many men and women who were enlisted in the war returned home with Post Traumatic Stress disorder. This disorder not only affects those who struggle with it directly, it also affects those around them. PTSD causes many men and women to lose emotion and have breakdowns. John taking the time to write about his feeling to his parents ensures them that he is still the same caring guy he was when he left and that the war hasn’t changed
