Throughout the history of American Literature, there have been hundreds of influential pieces which have left a mark on other writers. The book “In Honor of David Anderson Brooks, My Father” by Gwendolyn Brooks utilizes a unique writing style, theme and American values. This text was sharing her father’s story and personality to the reader before he passed away. He presumably lived alone and maintained his own home.

When someone experiences a terrible loss in their life usually they can cope with it in a multitude of ways. Some cope with it through deep mournful trials, replace the terrible moment with a more light and peaceful moment, block it out entirely, or they relive the event that caused the loss of that close friend or loved one over and over in their head. These coping mechanisms are evidently used in the entire cast of characters in the short story The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. In the story the characters experience the loss of a member in their unit during a patrol through the jungles of Vietnam. After they experience the loss of their comrade in arms the entire unit undergoes a process of mourning in their own distinct way.
Alcoholism is a severe addiction that indubitably affects one’s familial relationships, and which can tear families apart. In A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, Johnny, the father of protagonist Francie, is a serious alcoholic. Due to his drunkenness, he is often out of work, leaving him unable to support his family. Consequently, he is often viewed as a subpar father, who is unable to provide for and care for his children. However, despite Johnny Nolan’s severe drinking issues, he is still successful as a father overall because he is always well-meaning in his actions and he’s supportive and present when Francie truly needs him.
The father’s wife had recently died, leaving him with the boy to take care of with the only mindset of keeping him alive, doing anything for their survival. This affected the father in a big way, leaving him with little hope and hardly any reason to stay alive, but the boy was “his warrant” (McCarthy 5) , his only reason for life. In the story “Dog” by Richard Russo, only one thing is wanted by little Henry, not a phone nor any other unreasonable gifts that some children want--he just wants a dog, that he can run and play with. The only problem is nothing will convince his academic hearted literacy loving parents. Henry’s parents both put their interests and needs before his son. As a result he seems to act differently in ways that many people may find rude.
Those that he loved the most had abandoned him. The author demonstrates the beginning of this abandonment when he writes, “On Wednesday after Gloria left with the kids and a U-Haul trailer, I was sitting on the front steps, it was summer, and I was watching cars go by on the road” (Dubus 17). I believe this quote gives an active insight into the background as to why he makes the decisions that he does. He upholds Catholic doctrines and values in which he builds his faith and relationship with God. The main conflict in “A Father’s Story”, is a personal conflict.
Think of a circumstance where you were so hungry and thirsty, that you did not even care to think about your father anymore. That circumstance goes against common father-son relationships. The common father-son motif is where the father looks out and cares for the son. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, he explains why the circumstances around a father-son relationship can change their relationship, whether it 's for the better or the worse. Since the book is about the life of Elie in a Nazi concentration camp, the circumstances were harsh and took a toll on multiple father-son relationships.
Parents play a major role in a child’s life. Parents affect how their child behaves and who they become as they grow older. The ideal parent should be an attentive listener, have a positive attitude and love their child unconditionally. Firstly, I think that parents should always listen to their kids no matter what or else they will feel neglected.

Growing up as an African-American female, I have come to certain realizations that have made me more cautious of the people I chose to associate myself with on a day-to-day basis based on ignorance that society distributes for others’ use. For example, society portrays the black cultural without a father raised in a single-mother household in a low-income environment. By providing this image to the world, it allows them to interpret that image in any way they chose. In my case, my father was in my life for a short period of time which proved that stereotype right.
